General Information
Project description
The Environmental Habits and Values Survey (2020) aims to explore the values, opinions, attitudes and behaviour of Barcelona's citizens in relation to the environment, sustainability and climate change. This study was launched in 2000 and is carried out every four years. This year, 2024, the questions have been revised and the project is on-going.
The series has a dual value: on the one hand, it provides a snapshot of the values and attitudes of Barcelona residents at the time the survey is carried out, and on the other hand, it provides an evolution of the trends in the questions asked over the different editions.
In 2020, the survey was divided into six different blocks that refer to the following topics: information on sustainability and the environment, knowledge and opinion on sustainability, the knowledge of the +Sustainable Barcelona programme and citizen action, mobility, saving and responsible consumption, and climate change. These six blocks are maintained for the 2024 edition.
For the 2024 edition, a review of existing literature has been done on "Behavioural Science" applied in surveys that allowed, through data collection, building segments to rank citizens in terms of their willingness to act on climate change, based on their beliefs, attitudes and behaviours.
When revising the survey, questions have been included in the last section (climate change) so that certain questions, which are related to willingness, attitudes and beliefs, would allow us to obtain sufficient data to elaborate segments based on the reviewed literature.
It is expected to be able to segment the population into three categories:
1. Not willing to make any changes in their habits.
2. Willing to make changes but no knowledge or motivation to do so.
3. Willing to make changes and performing them.
The aim, among others, is to be able to plan which actions are necessary to achieve the objectives of the "Let's Change for Climate 2030" plan. At the same time, this data collection provides a picture of the values and habits of citizens of Barcelona.
The results would allow the Climate Change and Sustainability Office to develop, modify and/or maintain public policies to respond to the problems detected in accordance with the other departments based on the different necessities to trigger the action of each segment.
The "Let's Change for Climate 2030" plan aims to promote changes in the dominant culture and help develop and spread a new culture of sustainability that will intensify climate action in the city of Barcelona. It is equipped with different objectives, actions and indicators for its implementation.
