Home Energy Label Design

General Information

Project description

The purpose of this survey is to better understand Canadians’ perceptions, knowledge and decision-making related to home energy labels and to explore different design features and information presentations that may drive energy-efficient choices.

Analysis Plan

Pre-analysis plan: Is there a pre-analysis plan associated with this registration?

Yes

Hypothesis

The survey aims to answer the following primary questions:
1) What variations of different label design features and information content do people prefer?
2) What type of energy information is most useful when making decisions about home energy efficiency?
3) What are Canadians’ perceptions and understanding of the current home EnerGuide label?

How hypothesis will be tested

Participants will be shown variations of label design features and will be asked to select their preferred option. They will also answer questions about the perceived utility of different information content, their motivations related to home energy efficiency, and their perceptions of the current EnerGuide label.

Dependent variables

The primary outcomes include:
1) Attention/Interest: Of the options presented, which [grabs your attention most/are you most interested in]?
2) Ease of understanding: Of the options presented, which is easiest to understand?
3) Trust: Of the options presented, which seems most credible/trustworthy?
4) Utility: Which option would be most useful for understanding [your/the] home’s energy performance?
5) Action intentions: Which image would be most likely to encourage you to consider [making renovations to improve your home’s energy efficiency/the home’s energy efficiency in your decision about whether or not to buy or rent the home]?
Note: the utility and action intention question differ somewhat for homeowners vs. non-homeowners, so we will look at these for the whole sample and then grouped by homeownership status.
