Open data on positive COVID-19 cases in Colombia

Open Data Open Data

Innovative response

In response to the COVID19 crisis, the Government of Colombia has made available open data on all confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Colombia. The data can be accessed on multiple official websites, including the national open data portal. The data are at individual level, disaggregated by gender, city, department, status of the case (recovered, isolation), severity of the case (e.g. mild, asymptomatic), date of notification, if the individual case was imported from another country, date of death (if applicable). To maximise re-use, the data is available in csv, xml, txt, json and API format.

Specific issues addressed and anticipated impact

The data enable citizens to be informed about the current situation in Colombia in terms of COVID-19 diagnosed citizens. This includes the proper categorisation of those who have been hospitalized, recovered or deseased. The data also show the chain of infection, age and location as well as all the tests that have been made nationwide. In addition to information sharing, the data are being used by other actors to generate interactive dashboards on confirmed contagion cases or origin of imported cases. The available information has enabled the citizenship to acknowledge the seriousness of this health crisis enabling support for all and any efforts required by the government to properly face the emergency. Moreover, it provides legitimacy in the follow up of deceased and the fact that the government is not looking to manufacture or alter the figures.

Organisations/institutions involved

The Presidency of the Republic coordinates this effort through a Unified Command Post (PMU) led by Mr President Iván Duque Márquez, the Council of Ministers and Counselors of the Presidency, and the management and opening of data is led by the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Health (INS). The data monitoring and analysis center is also included.

Issues being addressed:
