Testing @ Nursing Homes

Innovative response

Mobilization of the Portuguese scientific community to increase the national test capacity, namely at nursing homes, by the development of a new test protocol that only uses national inputs, certified by the National Health Institute of Portugal.

Specific issues addressed and anticipated impact

Given the high health risk at nursing homes, the goal of this initiative is to increase PCR testing capacity at these institutions throughout the country. At the same time, it helps increase national test capacity, reducing foreign dependence of tests inputs

Organisations/institutions involved

Partnership between Higher Education and R&D Institutions, the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Territorial Cohesion. The 19 national laboratories already conducted more than 17 thousand tests, achieving a testing capacity of 3500 tests per day.
