The Gift-Giving Experience Project

The Gift-Giving Project is 90-minute (plus debrief) fast-paced project though a full design cycle, intended to give learners a tangible experience with design thinking. It is intended as a group activity (from 2 to 100+ participants) with a facilitator.
Learners pair up to interview each other, come to a point-of-view of how they might design for their partner, ideate, and prototype a new solution to "redesign the gift-giving experience" for their partner. The resource includes a handout, a facilitators guide, and video guidance for facilitators.
The resource is available in English, Spanish, French, German, Basque, Czech, Korean, Catalan, and Dutch.

  1. “A group of government staff from x department is coming this afternoon and they want us to do a workshop about design. Can you help?” Does this sound familiar? This situation happened numerous times for me and this toolkit was my go-to for these situations. No matter the group, it was always helpful in building empathy–from executives to front line staff. Plus, it was self-contained in 60-90 minutes. A helpful thing about this toolkit is that it includes a “facilitator version” with tips and tricks as well as things to watch for while participants are going through the activity. It does require some prototyping materials, but this can usually be collected by raiding your colleagues’ desk or cabinets (with permission) for random materials. Ideally, you work in an innovation lab that has a “prototyping kit” at the ready. But we are not all so lucky. It is nice to play some background music while participants go through the activities–I personally recommend instrumental Latin music jams. It also signals the start/stop of the activities, which is useful if you are working with a large group.
