Washing your hands regularly with soap and water is an effective and easy way of reducing the risk of people falling ill with COVID-19, influenzas or a cold, or contracting other viral illnesses. Stickers and posters were developed focusing on reframing, nudging and habit stacking. Displaying the posters in the office environment led to an increase in handwashing amongst employees. Soap consumption went up. Why this experiment was conducted: improved hygiene standards in the workplace is the…
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is a government-funded program for all permanent visa holders and some temporary visa holders who have less than a vocational level of English. The Department of Home Affairs commissioned BETA to evaluate the effectiveness of communication in participants’ home languages on increasing participation in the AMEP. Trial 1: We will send text messages to speakers of Mandarin, Cantonese,…
Challenge At West Kentucky Community & Technical College (WKCTC), many students were failing or withdrawing from courses, but few used the free tutoring services available on campus. Additionally, faculty had the potential to play a large role in helping facilitate student engagement in tutoring services through referrals, but they weren’t involved enough to have an impact. Design To better connect students to campus tutoring services, a series of nine behaviorally designed emails were sent to…

BETA partnered with AFSA on two projects to determine how to best communicate about the consequences of bankruptcy. In the first project, over 6,500 Australians completed one of six educational tools online that explain the consequences of bankruptcy and then assessed their levels of understanding. A pop-quiz and video were most effective, improving people’s understanding by 27 percentage points above the group that saw no educational tool. In the second project, we introduced five additional…

One of the main areas of focus involves the launch of a longitudinal survey that will, over time, collect…
Current psychological research has focused a great deal of studying susceptibility to misinformation across a single domain (e.g. COVID-19, Climate Change, etc...). It's not well understood if susceptibility is dependent on the content and context of misinformation. To address this, our team will investigate which predictors of susceptibility are consistent across topic areas.
How does information on the job market affect the expectations and preferences of pupils in pre-vocational education? A large online platform for career development and career counselling provided pupils who were attending pre-vocational colleges with information on the career prospects of professions in which they are interested. This information resulted in pupils revising their expectations, and made them more likely to aim for jobs with better career prospects.
The Government of Canada has announced plans to achieve 60% of personal vehicle sales to be comprised of zero-emissions vehicles(ZEV) by 2030, and 100% by 2025. While ZEVs have growing momentum among Canadians, sales penetration remains low compared to stated targets. In partnership with Natural Resources Canada, the Impact and Innovation Unit (IIU) are conducting this research to better understand the drivers and barriers to ZEV adoption among Canadians, and empirically test a selection of…
Air pollution is a serious health and environmental problem in many cities, including Pristina, Kosovo, where poor air quality is a frequent issue. Private cars and taxis are a major mode of transportation in Pristina, contributing significantly to both pollution and congestion, which is most problematic at peak traffic hours when individuals commute to and from work. To tackle this issue, ideas42 partnered with the UNDP Kosovo to design a behavioral intervention with the unifying slogan, "Give…
